| The Paperwork Steps
from Perusal to Performance |
|
- You decide to use our perusal
service to inspect the rehearsal material
for up to three musicals (sorry - this service
is not available for plays).
- Either from reading the perusal material or
one of our purchased play scripts, your group
likes one of the titles, and applies for a Royalty
Quotation. (NOTE
: Depending on the title, we will either provide
a fixed fee or variable fee (%age of Box Office)
quotation. The royalties for these are payable
prior to the production, or after the production
respectively).
- Having received that quotation, you decide
to proceed and stage a production of the chosen
title.
- You send back the original of the signed Licence
Application with the appropriate royalties cheque,
or deposit cheque.
- We then despatch a Licence To Perform together
with (where applicable) a Production Support
CD containing logos and other images.
- You then send in either, a purchase
order form, or a rental
order form for the rehearsal and performance
material together with the appropriate payment
and deposit cheques.
- For purchases we send you the ordered scripts
etc, and for rentals of musicals we then send
you the Director's Master Set to allow production
planning to take place.
- You should then return all perusal material
you may have.
- For rented material, at the appropriate dates,
we then send out the required set(s) of rehearsal
material and performance material.
- For variable fee royalties we will send you
a Royalty Declaration Form in the last week
of your production.

| When can we start
rehearsals? |
 |
It's possible of course
to start rehearsals as soon as you receive the
rehearsal material (scripts/scores etc), but until
you have applied for and received a Licence To
Perform from Plays And Musicals your production
is at risk - we may not be able to grant a licence
for the dates you want. We recommend you obtain
a quotation and apply for your Licence prior
to starting rehearsals, but at least six weeks
prior to your first performance (see below). |
|
| What happens about
Royalties? |
 |
Payment for Fixed Rate
Royalties MUST be received by Plays And Musicals
at least SIX WEEKS PRIOR to your first performance.
This is the payment you make for receiving a Licence
To Perform. If you perform a play or musical without
a licence, you or your organisation will be liable
to prosecution. |
|
| What if we don't charge
for admission? |
 |
You still need to pay
the royalty amounts. These payments are the only
return the writers receive (ie their income) from
their long hours imagining, creating and refining
their work for you to perform and enjoy. |
|
| Do we buy or hire
the Rehearsal Material? |
 |
The scripts, piano/vocal
scores and backing tapes or CD's are all sold
items. Where band parts or orchestrations are
available, they are hired. If you hire these band
parts, you choose how long you wish to have the
material and return this music within two weeks
of your final performance. |
|
| Do we have to buy
and hire everything that is available? |
 |
Only if you choose to
do so. There is a generally minimum number of
scripts which you should purchase. The number
varies for each show. It's made up of one script
for the director, one for each principal and two
for backstage use. Any free material is automatically
included with your scripts, except for Production
Notes, which are supplied with your Licence To
Perform. If you want to hire band parts, (music
for flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, etc)
these are supplied (where available) at an optional
extra cost. Band Parts are not available for all
titles though. For plays, the rehearsal material
consists of scripts and (where available) production
notes only. |
|
| Do we have to acknowledge
the playwright or composer? |
 |
Yes. If you produce a
programme or advertising posters you must include
two sentences. One acknowledging the playwright
(and the composer for musicals), and the other
containing the words "By arrangement with Plays
And Musicals". |
|
| Can we change the
script or score? |
 |
With prior permission
from us, and for small changes only, the answer
is yes. Major changes are not allowed so if you
have doubts, ask before you choose the show. |
|
| Can we change the
dates of our performances? |
 |
We will
try to accomodate your requests where you need
to change dates, of course. But you must advise
Plays And Musicals as soon as possible. Please
bear in mind that for licencing reasons, it may
not be possible to agree to your new dates, and
that Royalties paid may not be fully refundable.
