“Amid its
comedy there is fantasy, tenderness and
poignant comment on the human condition”
|
“A merry pillaging
of pop culture and music ranging in style
from Elizabethan madrigal to soft jazz to Broadway”
|
“Arnold and
Overton have matched some memorable tunes to
some very clever lyrics” CBC
(Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) |
|
| Based
around Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night', this
light comedy drama is a mixture of Shakespeare,
pop culture, movie making and romance. It
pays homage to the original strory, but
David Overton has updated it for a modern
audience. Set in modern California, tender
love songs, mistaken identites and a vaudeville-style
soft-shoe shuffle all combine to deliver
an outstanding musical feast.
Jason Berry, the cult movie director, is
on location in Buffalo Creek, California,
when disaster strikes: an earthquake cuts
him and his two assistants, Oscar and Nanette,
off from the outside world. Jason despairs
not only for his movie (he’s lost
his leading man), but also because, Libby
Richardson, the BBC Arts Reporter sent to
interview him, isn’t interested in
him romantically.
The
earthquake has also separated the twins,
Martin and Marion Net, (formerly a singing
duo known as the Tunettes), who have arrived
separately at the film location, both dressed
alike.
From here on, it’s a series of disguises,
mistaken identities and improbable love
triangles as the twins, each thinking the
other is dead, stumble into Buffalo Creek
and wind up playing the same lead in the
same movie and being pursued by the same
would-be lovers.
Naturally it all ends happily, but along
the way there are comic reversals and discoveries
that mean that none of the characters can
be the same, but allows them to grow and
discover the healing power of love.
