During their Bonfire Night party, Sara
catches her husband Ben with her drunk sister
Brigid wrapped round him, assumes the worst
and throws him out.
Although the result of an entirely innocent
incident with Brigid, Ben reluctantly agrees,
and is forced to take lodgings until he
can convince Sara of his innocence.
Thus, Ben arrives at the Mrs Schiller's
boarding house. With spartan accomodation
and an ageing Austrian landlady, he is plunged
into a bizarre series of conversations with
her, and flashbacks with Sara and his parents
His wild imagination portrays Mrs Schiller
as a Teutonic prison warder after she takes
away all his clothes, and his inability
to leave the room until she returns them,
lets him take stock of his married life.
'Digs' is a play with some poignant vignettes
on family and married life, and a contrasting
comedic thread throughout.
