A set of three short musical items expressly
written for use in church or school assemblies.
Each of the three has a place at particular
times of the year. 'No Room At The Inn' is
the Christmas item, The Sepulchre' is for
use at Easter and 'The Sower' is an ideal
Harvest Festival item. The first two mini-musicals
last about 3½ minutes each with 'The
Sower' running for anywhere between 2 and
3 minutes.A CD of backing tracks is provided
free with this title for use at rehearsals
and performances where an accompanist is not
available.
The three pieces make an attractive and effective
addition to a service of worship, a school
assembly, or a seasonal concert.
CHRISTMAS - 'No
Room At The Inn'
This
Christmas song was originally intended for
concert performance, but has proved very effective
when the events depicted are visually presented
using costimes and mimed action. The work
is intended for performance in a church, chapel
or school and could be sung by a static choir.
The music, comprising one song, is not hard
though and could be sung by any voices willing
to have a practice or two. The keyboard accompaniment
can be greatly enhanced if suitable percussion
instruments are added. For example, the trotting
sound of the donkey might use tuned wooden
blocks and tinkling sounds could add to the
atmosphere for the appearance of stars.
The action is intended for performance by
children (aged approx 5 to 10), , who mime
the actions described as the song is sung.
Suitable costumes for Mary, Joseph, Landlord
and Inn Guests can usually be found or made
by parents or teachers. Stars to carry and
cattle masks could be drummed up from Sunday
School, the Art class or homework.
EASTER - 'The Sepulchre'
This
short musical drama recounting the events
at the Resurrection was written by Les Emmons
for performance by the choir of Breadsall
All Saints Parish Church, Derbyshire at an
Easter Family Service. There are chorus parts
for Soprano, Alto and Baritone, but a unison
group of singers would do just as well. leaving
out the Alto part. It has a solo section for
The Angel, but this could equally well be
spoken. The two Mary's and The Angel provide
the action, and should therefore be in suitable
costume. The chorus singers representing the
disciples and followers, may be placed to
one side if required. If the singers prefer
not to act out the parts, they may be mimed
by actors of any age.
The presentation should be brought to a finish,
by all present joining in a suitable Easter
hymn or chorus (eg Thine Be The Glory).
HARVEST - 'The
Sower'
Another
short musical item for performance by young
children. A small group of singers is required
to sing the music (one short, simple song)
while the suitably costumed children act out
the parable from St Matthew, Chapter 13, Verses
18-23
As the song begins, the Farmer enters and
prepares to sow his/her pretend seed. At the
appropriate point in the song, the farmer
casts his seed as described in an open area
where chickens are, on rocks, on thorns and
then on the good soil. It can also be fun
to cast the seed on the congregation/audience
and encourage them to 'grow tall' at the end.
The Chickens gobble up the seed as it is sown.
The Hot Sun approaches the Rocks where the
Good Seed there roll over on their backs frantically
waving their arms and legs in the air before
dying. The Thorns stand up and smother the
Good Seed in their midst. If required the
music can pause to allow more time for the
action.
At the end, the Good Seed that has fallen
on good ground slowly grow tall and wave ears
of corn in the air, after which a person comes
forward, invites all to sit down and reads
the above parable from the Bible.
